WHO WE ARE

Commissioner Malera is a Lawyer and Human Rights and Gender Expert, with 21 years of work experience in governance, human rights and gender in both the public and civil society sectors in Malawi. She is currently the Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi. She previously held the positions of: Team Leader of UK aid’s Malawi Programme on Violence Against Women and Girls: Prevention and Response; Executive Director, Action Aid Malawi; Executive Secretary of the Malawi Human Rights Commission; Director of Legal Services and Deputy Director of Legal Services in the same institution. Commissioner Malera is also a socio-legal researcher and an exceptional human rights and gender equality advocate. She’s an architect of some Malawi NGOs working on governance issues as well as on the advancement of women’s rights. She serves in a number of Boards of human rights NGOs in Malawi. Commissioner Malera is passionate about using the law as a tool for social change and attainment of social justice and gender equality. She is deeply committed to the work on reducing the prevalence of violence against women and girls in Malawi and improving the justice system for women and girls living with violence in Malawi. Commissioner Malera holds a Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB Honours), obtained from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College in 2002, and graduated from the University of the Free State, Republic of South Africa with a Masters in Law Degree (LLM) in 2007.
